Wait and See

Pao is a fan of this early language development system called Your Baby Can Read. Founder Dr. Robert Titzer claims that there is a small window of opportunity between infancy and age five when we can teach our babies to  learn written and spoken word simultaneously. It's pretty impressive if you watch their videos -

I, on the other hand, am not a fan. If you read my blog, you may have realized by now that I am mostly old school when it comes to child rearing. I'd like Malik to learn reading the traditional way - in first grade maybe, with his classmates, so it's more fun. In the meantime, let's let him be a baby. He should play most of the time, eat good food, sleep when he wants to, throw tantrums occasionally heehee.

I personally think the head start that Dr. Titzer is talking about is really all just superficial. What I want to do is teach Malik to genuinely like learning. When I was a kid I loved learning new things. I read a lot. I took encyclopedias and dictionaries to the loo! (Nerdoks!) I don't know if my parents taught me this discipline. Maybe not, because my parents never forced me to study. I really just liked learning that's all. Hopefully, we'll be able to raise Malik with the same predisposition. And oh, he should learn to ask, question authority if he must, be curious and creative! Damn adults who stifle children's creativities!

Okay, enough proselytizing. These are anyway all just theory. When Pao is around, he makes Malik watch Your Baby Can Read. Religiously. Once every day, without fail.

I'm allowing this in the meantime. I see Malik enjoys watching the video. I think he has a crush on one of the babies. He doesn't know Aleka is all grown up now. Haha Here's how Malik looks like when he's watching Aleka -

"Uyyy, si Malik may crush."
