Forbidden Broadway

Our friend OJ Mariano is playing one of four actors in Upstart Productions' version of Forbidden Broadway.

The cast of Forbidden Broadway
(L-R):  Lorenz Martinez, OJ Mariano, Liesl Batucan and Caisa Borromeo

Forbidden Broadway pokes fun at popular Broadway shows - Rent, Cats, Mama Mia, Wicked etc. It has been running off-Broadway since 1982 and will be playing in Manila until May 27.

I have not heard of Forbidden Broadway before. Actually, I have not heard of half of the songs/artists/songwriters/producers/shows that were the object of Gerard Allessandrini's parody. I've only ever seen one show in the real Broadway (not Broadway Centrum, hehe). And I'm not cultured enough to  know any Broadway song by heart. It's just not my thing.

So occassionally during the show, I felt out of place for not laughing with the crowd when a line was supposed to be funny. Thankfully, I did not leave the theater feeling bad about myself. I half suspected some people in the theater were only pretending to understand. Ha! I did wish I watched more musicals.

I honestly appreciated the show in spite of my ignorance. I think it's partly because I was amazed at how OJ has evolved into a respected theater actor. We've always known him to be a singer (He sang at our wedding.) I was pleasantly surprised that acting-wise, he can hold his own against more experienced thespians.

The Boys

The Girls
(I just gained a little weight. I am not pregnant. !)

You can still catch Forbidden Broadway at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza Makati tomorrow and on May 25, 26 and 27. There will be guest appearances by showbiz personalities. Click here for details.
